Liquid Penetrant Test

The penetrant examination is the non-destructive examination method used to determine the surface breaking imperfections within the material without damaging the material with the usage of the colored paint that can penetrate the material.

The liquid penetrant examination is an economic and simple method to determine the surface breaking imperfections. In this method, the surface breaking imperfections are determined by using product combinations that consist of PENETRANT & INTERMEDIATE CLEANER & DEVELOPER with the help of liquids that have low surface tension.

• THE MAIN PRINCIPLE

The penetrant liquid with strong contrast effect makes the tiny faults on the suitable developer layer easily noticeable. If the discontinuities are similar to cracks, the linear patterns are obtained while the pore type discontinuities cause round patterns. If the surface is not cleaned well or if the examination piece has high porous structure, this will directly affect the test result in a negative way and such conditions must be taken into consideration.

• APPLICATION & ADVANTAGES

The examination generally begins with the pre-cleaning process that removes the dirt, oil, rust, water etc. materials that may cover the defects by causing thickness, with the help of mechanical or chemical methods. Afterwards the penetrant material is sprayed and applied on the material.

Penetrant is desired to create strong contrast with the applied developer. Therefore the “Colored Penetrant Liquids” or the “Fluorescent Penetrant Liquids” are used.

Fluorescent Penetrant Liquids : It allows tests to be done under ultraviolet rays.

Colored Penetrant Liquids They are generally red. The property of the penetrant liquid is to be able to penetrate the surface cracks and gaps. After the testing material is covered with the visible or fluorescent penetrant, the main cleaning process is carried out. The excess penetrant is removed from the surface with a suitable solvent. A developer is applied afterwards. The developer acts like a blotting paper and draws the penetrant material from the surface braking imperfections. The bright color difference between the developer and the penetrant material with visible paint, makes the overflow visible. In the applications with fluorescent penetrants, the fluorescent paint and the ultraviolet light carry out the overflowing process in a brighter way, making the process faults easily visible.

The liquid penetrant examination brings great advantages in the surface examination of the materials that does not magnetize.

• OUR APPLICATION FIELDS

The liquid penetrant examination can be used to determine the surface defects anticipated in scope of all metallic or non-metallic materials. We offer services to determine and report the faults and errors such as surface discontinuities, cracks, pores, insufficient weld penetration etc. with the help of our expert teams (PT1, PT2 certificates) classified according to TS 7477 (EN473).
